Control Room Jobs.

  • Barge Engineer ($89,000) is in charge of control room operations his next in command is;
  • Control Room Operator (CRO) ($65,000) followed by the entry level personnel;
  • Assistant CRO (ACRO) ($59,000) Certified seamen from Able to Master Seamen are among the many Mariners on oilrigs, as a result of legislation defining certain Rigs as ships. In the control room of Semi-Submersibles the stability of the rig is controlled. Liquid transfers like diesel and fresh water from supply boats to the rig storage tanks are also controlled here. It is also the control area when the vessel is moving location.

Electrical Department.

  • Electrician($65,000)
  • Electronic technician($74,000)
  • Chief electrician($83,000)
  • Maintenance supervisor (Electrical)($87,500)

All the above are responsible for the maintenance and repair of all the electrical equipment on board the rig, right down to changing light bulbs.

On occasion they may have to work more than the normal 12 hour shift. They can be called out at any time during their time off to fix a major problem. This is rare.

There will be times when they will have to work at height. In a work basket, hoisted by crane or air winch. Occasionally they may have to don a riding belt (harness) and get hoisted by air winch.

Rig Management

  • Toolpusher($108,000); works in the rig offices and the rig floor. He also has responsibilities on the main deck. He is usually an experienced driller.
  • Offshore Installation Manager (OIM)($110,000); has often worked his way up through the drill crew ranks. He is in overall charge of the rig. Hence sometimes called “Man In Charge” (MIC).
  • Company man/woman($160,000); is the oil companies on board representative employee. He is not employed by the drilling company operating the rig. On a drilling rig an oil company employee works with the drilling company to supervise its interests, helping the strategy for drilling the well.

Mechanical Department

  • Motorman($57,500)
  • Assistant mechanic($65,000)
  • Mechanic($72,000)
  • Chief mechanic($80,000)
  • Maintenance supervisor (Mechanical)($87,500)

All the above are responsible for the maintenance and repair of the diesel generators and all other mechanical operations on the rig including the rig floor equipment. They carry out regular maintenance on every machine on the rig.

Subsea Department

  • Assistant Subsea Engineer ($65,000); can sometimes be promoted from Roughnecks. More usually from a mechanical background.
  • Subsea Engineer ($86,000); is responsible for the Blow Out Preventer unit and the motion compensation system of the rig among other duties.

Derrickman

The Derrickman works in the mud pump room where he is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the mud pumps and mul holding pits.  He is a member of the drilling drew  and the name derrickman derives from the platform on which he works which is attached to the derrick or mast.  This platform is around 26m above the drilling rig floor.or

The Derrickman can expect to earn around $65,000 and is second in rank to the driller unless the crew includes an assistant driller who is more senior.

The position requires wearing a specific derrickman safety harness allowing him to lean out from the ‘monkeyboard’ or platform.

Duties for this position include:-

•    Align and manipulate sections of pipe or drill stem from a platform on the rig derrick during the removal and replacement of strings of pipe, or drill stem and drill bit
•    Assist in setting up, taking down and transporting drilling and service rigs
•    Operate and maintain drilling rig diesel motors, transmissions, pumps and drilling mud systems, and mix mud chemicals, cements and additives
•    Read gauges to monitor pressure, density, rate and concentration and adjust pumping procedure as required
•    Record mud flows and volumes and take samples
•    Supervise floorhands and laborers

Assistant Driller

Assistant Driller is a multifaceted position and required a variety of skills depending on drilling operations being carried out at any given time.  This is a supervisor position and he is responsible for the Derrickman, the Pumpman and all Roughnecks.

This position is sometimes referred to as the trainee driller and will also be responsible for helping the floorhands when required.  In this position you can expect to earn anywhere between $54,000 and $70,000 depending on the structure of the position.

Assistant drillers are a vital part of the team performing general labor duties by operating equipment during drilling.

Some of the primary functions include:

1. Setting up, dismantling, and transporting equipment
2. Maintenance and clean up of the drilling area
3. Handle, sort and move drill tools, pipes, cement and other materials
4. Operates sections of pipe, drill stem during drilling and removal
5. In charge of transporting various materials and necessary equipment

Driller

Bike Santa BarbaraDrillers have a highly responsible position and are in charge of anything and everything that happens above and on the rig floor.  Drillers operate the drilling equipment and comes with a pay check of around $86,000.

This is not an easy position and requires a lot of skill both on the machines and as a supervisor.  The Rig manager is your superior and will inform you of what tasks need to be performed.  It is then your responsible to ensure that the crew are directed to do the right tasks at the right time and requires a lot of initative.

This is seldom a position offered to an outsider and requires an understanding of all levels of the job and all aspects of the rig.  The job includes:-

•    Working on the rig taking part in drilling activities
•    Training new staff
•    Overseeing crew members
•    Recording and dealing with paperwork
•    Overall co-ordination of the team

Roughneck Jobs

Roughnecks work on the rig floor in teams of three and are responsible for the operation of equipment and machines as requested by the driller.  During the drilling process, one roughneck will be present in the mud room at all times.  His responsibility is to ensure that the shakers and other machinery are all working properly.

Although the positions of roustabouts and roughnecks is considered to be unskilled and semi-skilled, they are extremely important for the rig operation and for roughnecks a salary of $59,000 can be expected.

This is a very demanding physical position that requires being able to work for long lengths of time in very unfavourable conditions.

Duties include:-

•    assemble and repair oil field machinery and equipment
•    use various types of equipment to dig ditches, post holes, pour concrete for slaps or securing posts, put together derricks
•    keep the deck clean and clear of safety hazards
•    moving equipment around the rig
•    scrape rust
•    paint
•    connect sections of pipe for the well
•    rig and sling loads being moved by the rig’s crane, and
•    … other duties as assigned!

Crews generally consist of three to four members working eight to twelve hour shifts.

Pumpman

The pumpman or assistant derrickman will earn $55,000 to $60.500 and is positioned in the mud pump room.  He may also be required to work on the drill floor in the position of roughneck when necessary.

Although this position is not considered an entry level position, it also does not required any qualifications as such.

The responsibilities include:-

•    Safety and proper operation of the liquid transfer system
•    Maintaining cargo lines
•    Dealing with connection manifolds
•    Rebuilding valves, pumps and leaks in the system
•    Various engineering department duties.

Daily hours range from 8-12 and work usually consists of 60 days on with 20-30 days off.  This is a great position if you are looking for advancement in the industry.

Crane Operator

Crane operator  is supervisor to the assistant crane operator as well as the roustabouts.  In this position you can expect to earn in the region of $69,500

Requirements for this position will include

•    Extensive experience on crane work – either on rigs or in other fields
•    Management skills and the ability to handle a high level of responsibility.

Many crane operators start off as assistant crane operators as this is very much a position that is filled from within.  If you have no crane experience but wish to move into this position, then starting as a roustabout is ideal.

Crane operators need to have good depth perception and an ability to work under pressure.  This is a very challenging position but can be extremely rewarding.

Assistant Crane Operator

Assistant Crane Operator is generally an experienced Roustabout who has the qualifications to operate cranes.  This is the leading position to Crane Operator and will earn in the region of $59,000. Once an assistant crane operator advances to full crane operator, the salary increases substantially.

Job requirements include:-

•    Assisting the crane operator
•    Guiding and bringing supplies aboard
•    Learning how to master hauling items such as castings, pipes, rig equipment as well as groceries and other items without problems.

An Assistant Crane Operator is also expected to have quick reflexes for emergencies and the ability to remain calm and hold on to a sense of humor.  Accurate depth perception is vital and a knowledge of painting and an ability to clean is vital.  This position involves a fair amount of general maintenance jobs.

As an old rounder, this position will require you to have a broad knowledge of the entire rig operation.

The crane operator or assistant crane operator operate from a cab working the controls.  This is a command position and accuracy is very important when manoeuvring equipment in tight spaces.  Modern cranes have the capacity for foot pedals, levers, dials and switches in conjunction with a fully operating computerized system.  Learning how to use these devices can be difficult and will require three years of study and 144 hours experience before advancement will be considered.

Maintenance Foreman

Transocean WildcatOil Rig Painters work at high altitudes so it is important to be able to deal with heights.  The job involves painting all aspects of the rig and putting up scaffolding.  The painter will report to the Barge Supervisor and may have an assistant or will work with the roustabouts.
