As a Materials man/woman(Storeman/woman) you will be responsible for the maintenance of the stores and ordering and receiving of stock.  It is vital to be computer literate for this position and although this is considered a very easy position to hold, it does require being available at any time of the day or night for cargo coming aboard.  The salary that one can expect for this position is $59,000.

The position involves:-

•    Being in charge of the maintenance of stores
•    Ordering and receiving stock
•    Issuing disposal and recovery of mechanical systems
•    Ensuring all transactions are performed accureately
•    Dealing with Physical Inventory Audits
•    Handling the reconciliation of internal and external storage locations
•    Dealing with reports on unsafe conditions and events

Having a background in warehousing and materials handling will be very beneficial and it is vital to be computer literate.

Mud Engineer

Rig III
The Mud Engineer is responsible for handling the drilling fluids and is likely to have a degree in chemistry or some secondary chemistry qualification and an excellent understanding of the drilling procedures.  Before taking up the position, a special training course needs to be completed.

The position of mud engineer carries a salary of around $72,500 and involves setting up a ‘mud program’ according to the geology of the project.  During the process of drilling the mud driller is responsible for making sure that the mud added is made up to the right specifications.  This is vital for the stability of the drill.

Information is relayed from the mud logger during the process of drilling and it is the responsibility of the mud engineer to check the Marsh funnel viscosity and density frequently to ensure that the correct specifications are kept.

This position requires:-

•    A high level of responsibility
•    An ability to think on your feet
•    An indepth understanding of the drilling processes

Rig Safety & Training Co-ordinator

Rig Safety & Training Co-ordinator (RSTC) is considered one of the best paid positions in relation to the amount of work involved and pays around $80,000

PREREQUISITES / QUALIFICATIONS:

Crane

•    High school diploma or equivalent. Work experience and demonstrated ability of oral and written communications which may be substituted in lieu of formal education.
•    Work experience on an offshore installation. Consideration shall be given to candidates with QHSE experience in associated industries.
•    Proficiency in written and spoken English with the ability to communicate effectively with non-English and English speaking crews on issues related to QHSE.
•    Basic computer skills.

Offshore Medic

Medics on oil rigs are generally not qualified doctors but do have a high level of medical training and are often qualified nurses.  When working on smaller rigs, this position is sometimes coupled with the Rig Safety and Training Co-ordinator.  The duties of this position include:-

•    Maintaining the Medical Stocks and supplies
•    Issuing Medication
•    Keeping up of all medical reports for all crew on board
•    Training crew first aiders.

An estimated salary for this position is between $60,000 and $69,000

Rig Radio Operator

The oil rig Radio Operator will earn US$62,000 and although the easiest of the oil rig position, has it’s own set of disadvantages.  Ham radio or Amateur radio operators as they are affectionately called will require a set of stills in order to do the job.

The requirements for this position include:-

•    Entry level understanding of morse code or continuous wave as it is referred to.

To obtain the required information to pass such a test, you can download all the information you need from the American Amatuer Radio League AARL web site. Once you are ready to take your test, you can contact the local Ham Radio VE testing station in your area and complete your FCC qualification.

This position requires many hours of doing not very much and occasionally having to deal with high levels of stress.  As a result, it is not for everyone, but as the easiest entry level position on the rigs, it is very popular.

Offshore Scaffolder

Oil Rid Scaffolder earn around $58,000 per year and are not tied to any particular rig, but work on contractual basis through their company of employment.  Oil rigs require staff to operate at various heights and scaffolding as well as platforms need to be constructed by professional crews.  This is the job of the oil rig scaffolders.  Safety is the primary concern of a oil rig scaffolder and their main responsibilities and duties will include:-

TORRE
•    Designing and constructing of scaffolds
•    Building of other oil related projects as needed

Qualifications for this position include:-

1.    Knowledge of the offshore drilling regulations
2.    Understanding of all materials used in the construction of scaffolding and
3.    Knowledge of the standard requirements for installation of scaffolding and platforms.

Most oil rig scaffolders work as a team and will supervise an on site rig team.  Training for this entry level position is on the job and obviously requires a comfort with heights.  Scaffolding supervisor is the natural progression and will involve co-ordinating a team.  Positions as oil rig scaffolders are reliant on the industry growth.  In time of boom, there is a huge demand in this field, but during a recession or limited growth, this is one of the first positions to feel the crunch.

Rig Welder

A Rig Welder will earn in the region of US$62,000 per annum. Welder are employed either as permanent on-rig welders or as part of a welding squad that move around on a contract basis and generally are employed for larger jobs.  It is vital to have a qualification in order to be employed as an oil rig welder.

Qualifications required for this position include

Extensive welding experience with the following accreditation:-

•    In the United Kingdom, many of the oil companies will insist on a CITB ‘6GR’ certification.
•    In the US, your accreditation only lasts for six months unless you receive it through an AWS facility.
•    First aid
•    Helicopter underwater escape training
•    Offshore survival training

Welding position are still considered to be entry level position, so it is possible to find work on a rig in this position even if you have never worked on oil rigs before.  It  is, however, a very demanding and dangerous job and is not suited to many people.

Roustabout Jobs

The term roustabout relates to casual labourers that worked in carnivals and circuses travelling from one state to another. In the oil industry this term relates to oil rig work and a roustabout or maintenance roustabout is an entry level job. The average pay for this position, which is considered the lowest on the oil rigs is around US$40,000 to 60,000 per year.

No specific experience is required for this position and the natural progression from this position to roughneck is the most common advancement. There is no formal training involved for the position of roustabout, but as it is a very physical job, candidates need to be in good physical condition.


The only requirements that are necessary are:

Constitution Spar

• A valid drivers licence
• Understanding of Workplace Hazardous Information Systems
• First aid training
• Knowledge of Hydrogen Sulfide Safety.

Working shifts are usually 12 hours with equal amount of time on as time worked. The roustabout will spend a large amount of their shift working on their feet. Position can be both onshore and offshore with the primary responsibility being to keep the rig decks clean. Other duties will include guiding cranes, supplying equipment for the rig floor and assisting Roughnecks on the drill floor when required.
